The Perfect Panna Cotta

Panna cotta is one of those desserts I always thought would be too complicated to make. However, it is actually quite the opposite. It really shouldn’t take much more than 5 minutes to make–and if it does you’re doing something wrong. The quickness of this dessert makes it great for dinner parties, as well as a tasty treat during the week.

Creating the Perfect Reading Nook

It seems as though the bedroom transformation will never end. But now I am going to direct your attention to a different corner of our bedroom, away from the oft-mentioned bedspread.

A reading nook has always been one of the things I have wanted in a bedroom–though with all the extra furniture we had, it seemed impossible. I kept saying to myself, “All I need is just one little corner.” Well, when push came to shove, I began looking around our bedroom and decided our ugly Booksellers Shelf we got from Pier 1 a few years back (when Pier 1 was still cool) had to go. I put it on Craigslist, and sold it within a week to someone very happy to take it off of our hands. Great bargain for her, and great for us because we finally cleared a huge piece of furniture out of the bedroom. This left me with my own cozy little corner in which to create.

Yet Another Bedroom Update

The bedroom has been making leaps and bounds this week and is finally feeling more and more like the bedroom I’ve been wanting (remember this ugly thing?). We are totally in love with the new bedspread, as well as the new jersey cotton sheets I picked up from Bed Bath and Beyond last week. I must say, if you are in the market for new sheets and want something in-between flannel and cotton but don’t want t spring for 600 thread count sheets, these are superb! They are budget friendly and silky smooth.

So back to the update… Just the other day I had the idea to take the extra Ikea Lack floating shelf we had lying around, and install it over the bed. It makes the bed feel super cozy and almost nook-like. These lack shelves are great because they’re so plain and simple, and relatively easy to install. Also, the addition of the shelf allowed us to put a few books in the room, which I  always think makes a space feel more lived in and relaxed. I decided that some orange books would go great with the bed spread, and would also draw the color up the wall a little bit. Especially since the bedspread and books are the only orange things we have in the bedroom.

Next week (hopefully) you will get to see the reading nook I have been working hard on creating. That is, once we find a way to run out and pick up our new comfy chair. Anyone want to take a trip to Ikea?

Clinton Street Buttermilk Biscuits

If you are a real New Yorker, you are probably no stranger to Clinton Street Baking Company.  They are best known for their pancakes–which I can verify are amazing–but they also have a pretty big breakfast following in general. I’m a huge omelet fan and have never had a fluffier omelet in my life than from Clinton Street–delicious! They are basically an institution in the New York breakfast world, and recently came out with a cookbook sharing all of their deepest, darkest, most delicious secrets. If you recall, I checked their book out of the library a few weeks back and have been dying to make something out of it since. So this last weekend’s V-day brunch was the perfect opportunity to try out these buttermilk biscuits I’ve been eyeing, and boy were they yummy!

A Breakfast Strata to Write Home About

It’s Valentine’s weekend, and though Valentine’s Day it is typically about showing your significant other how much you love them, it’s also possible to share some love, or at least some food, with a few close friends, right? Well, this Sunday Alex and I decided to invite our favorite couple, Michael and Brian, over to share some brunch love.

You may recognize Michael from his original web series, Jack In A Box, which he writes, directs and stars in . You may have also seen him in his recent star turn on 30 Rock, in the hilarious Brooklyn Without Limits episode. Either way, check out his site, he’s amazing. Random tangent over, moving on…

We cooked up quite a menu, but I’m not going to share all the details with you in one post. However, I think it’s only fair that I share with you my favorite dish of the morning–a Breakfast Strata with sausage, spinach and Gruyère. This recipe originally came from Gourmet (R.I.P.), however I found it via one of my favorite food blogs, Eggs On Sunday.

This is a great make-ahead dish and is meant to be assembled the night before or at least 8 hours before baking–which of course makes for a super simple entrée that is worry-free the next morning.

The Bedspread Has a New Admirer

I forgot to add this picture in my previous post about our new bedspread.  I think it’s clear that Ira also enjoys the new look. You can tell by his fashion pug stature.

Freshen Up that Drab Bedroom

Usually the focus of any bedroom is…the bed, duh. But at the same time, it’s often the room we tend to overlook. We think, eh it’s just that room where we go to sleep, wake up and get dressed. But when you live in small spaces, the bedroom actually plays a very important part in your home. For me, it functions not only as a place to sleep and get dressed, but also as an office of sorts (where do you think I’m writing this, anyway?)–which makes it that much more important for it to look nice.

Above, is a picture of our drab, tired old bedspread. We bought it a year ago from L.L. Bean, and while it has served its purpose wonderfully, it was time to move on to something a bit more eye catching.

Bedspread hunting has been a chore, let me tell you. Finding the perfect bed spread can be difficult, especially when it is the focal point of the room. Add working on a budget makes it even hard. But I was determined to find something I loved for a reasonable price, and after popping my head into just about every store I could imagine I was surprised to find exactly what I wanted on Amazon.

See the new look, after the jump!
